We are pleased to announce the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has awarded a grant to support Data Umbrella. This grant is part of CZI Science efforts to support diversity and inclusion in computational science.
Communities in the open source and data science space are vital to the greater digital and science ecosystem, and this grant demonstrates significant recognition and support of that.
We are honored and grateful to be a recipient, particularly alongside organizations doing remarkable work in the D&I space. We would like to congratulate the other grantees.
About Data Umbrella
Data Umbrella was founded in December 2019. It is a community for underrepresented persons in data science.
Since its founding, Data Umbrella has organized over 30 events for the community, including four online sprints. The 30+ events cover topics related to data science, open source (OS) and career advice. Invited speakers come from open source communities in data science such as core python, bokeh and plotly visualization libraries, numpy, pandas, STUMPY and sphinx. Video presentations on open source libraries and how to contribute provide an avenue to connect the community with OS projects.
Most recently, Data Umbrella has focused on early data science skills and open source. They do research on diversity and inclusivity and have compiled resources on affinity communities, accessibility, responsibility and various other topics of relevance which are available on their website.
Data Umbrella recognizes that open source dearly lacks the participation of many groups of people. Their goal is to provide a bridge from open source projects and contributors to the community by hosting webinars, organizing sprints and sharing resources and events.
